On foot

from Sant’Ambrogio

from the car park in front of the train station (railway Turin-Susa or Turin-Bardonecchia alighting at Sant’Ambrogio Torinese), walk along Via Caduti per la Patria, at the end of which turn right to reach the parish church of St. John Vincent. A short ramp behind the church leads to the beginning of the paved mule path. Along the path you will find the 15 stations of the Cross that lead directly to the village S. Pietro.

From here follow the track that proceeds through the houses at the end of which an easy footpath leads to the Piazzale Croce Nera (parking). 10 minutes walk along an asphalt road leads directly to the Sacra di San Michele, or just before the car park, a turn to the right leads directly to the Sepulchre of the Monks, and from here to the Sacra di San Michele.
Ascent: 600 meters
Required time: approximately 1 hour 30 minutes
Difficulty: easy
Recommended period: from spring to autumn

from Chiusa di San Michele:

from the train station (railway Turin-Susa or Turin-Bardonecchia alighting at Condove-Chiusa di San Michele). Walk towards the centre of Chiusa di San Michele until arriving at the parish of St. Peter the Apostle from where the mule track begins (to the right of the church, trail 503) ending at Piazzale Croce Nera (parking). 10 minutes walk along an asphalt road leads directly to the Sacra di San Michele.
Ascent: 600 meters
Required time: about  1 hour 40 minutes
Difficulty: easy
Recommended period: from spring to autumn

from Mortera hamlet (above Avigliana)

starting at the “Path of Princes”.
After about 20 minutes, you reach the area called “Pian di Fan” (Pogolotti farm), then the mule-track begins to climb towards the area of the so-called “Emme,” a series of switchbacks at the end of which you are at Punta del Farò.
Now the route turns left and within a few minutes you arrive at Piazzale Croce Nera (parking). 10 minutes walk along an asphalt road leads directly to the Sacra di San Michele.
Ascent: 300 meters
Required time: approximately 1 hour 30 minutes
Difficulty: easy
Recommended period: from spring to autumn
Every year on 24 December, a torchlight procession starts from Mortera hamlet at 21.30, and, via the Path of Princes, arrives at the Sacra di San Michele for the Christmas Midnight Mass

from Oulx

railway Turin-Bardonecchia or Turin-Modane, alighting at the station Oulx-Cesana-Claviere-Sestriere.
In total, this route is over 60 kilometres long and passes through the parks of Gran Bosco of Salbertrand and Orsiera Rocciavrè.
The path is divided into 3 stages walkable in 3 days:

  • First stage: Abbadia Oulx (1100 m) Gad (1067 m) Gran Bosco (1088 m) Sapè (1197 m).
  • Second stage: Frais (1490 m) La Losa (1201m) Gran Mombello (1261m) Pra La Grangia (1350m).
  • Third stage: Pian Cervetto (1380 m) Gravio Refuge (1390 m) Colle dell’Orso (1920 m) Col Bione (1420 m) La Mura (1091 m) Bennale (933 m) Sacra San Michele (962 m).

You may stay in guest houses or take your own tent.
The route of the path is marked with numerous metallic yellow signs.
From the Sacra di San Michele you can return to Oulx, using the railway station at  S. Ambrogio, served by local trains for the Upper Valley.
At any point on the path you can descend to the valley floor and state roads 24 and 25.
